Winters Bone

In the film Winters Bone, i believe that it relies mainly upon its understanding of its social context as it is a film which aims to bring to light the idea of struggle when it comes to trying to live and with having less money then you need to survive. Since the film is set in Ozark's, southwest Missouri, it means that the directors would of had to study the place to make sure the scenery matched the story when it was telling the audience a story and trying to help them emphasise with the issues the family was facing and understand the films social context.

A scene that i felt was very key in bringing to light the ideas of a family struggling without a father and money was when we see Ree Dolly giving up her horse to her neighbours because of the lack of food they had to give the horse. The idea of money was bought up because of how the conversation mainly revolved around the 'price of hay being too expensive' so in order for the horse to survive Ree must give it to her neighbour. This scene adds to the whole idea of the film relying upon its social context as in the film we can see that most of the homes rely on their animals to make their profit whether its by trading them, buying and selling them, or even slaughtering them and by Ree having to give away her house without the guarantee that she will get it back in the future due to not having the money or food ever again it is almost like she is giving away her only means of making money, which may be the reason she tips even more to wanting to have to join the army.

In addition i felt that this scene really helped support the idea of the social problems that the film as a whole was trying to portray because the use of the dim colours which almost show us the scene as being black and white in the mise-en-scene which creates the ideas of a land which has been drained of life and the will to live and is slowly dying due to not having enough money or the correct weather to keep it alive, which in my opinion makes me think that that the use of the mise-en-scene is actually to support the idea and image about Ree and her families lifestyle, in terms of how the audience are positioned to see how they are struggling in terms of money which for people in southwestern Missouri might be a real life struggle making this films social problems link to what they are experiencing causing the audience to be positioned in a way that makes them emphasise with the characters a lot more and to understand their struggle pulling us more towards there side when ever problems within the family are bought to life.
